The Mercy University Hospital, Cork
For over 150 years The Mercy University Hospital has been caring for the sick and injured and has been a place of respite for the aged and infirm. It has been a place of healing, comfort and compassion and has been a progressive and innovative hospital whilst maintaining its voluntary ethos of supporting and caring for its patients.
When the Mercy University Hospital first opened its doors in 1857 there were 40 beds in the Hospital and eight admissions were recorded on the first day. Today the Mercy University Hospital is a 347-bed acute general hospital providing in-patient, day-patient, outpatient and A&E services. ‘The Mercy’ is still located in the centre of Cork and covering an area the size of 10 football pitches employs over 1200 staff, has 350 beds and treats over 100,000 patients each year.
