Edinburgh Clinical Trials – CARE Study
Invitation to participate in Brain Cavernomas Study
Professor Rustam Al-Shahi Salman, Clinical Director of the Edinburgh Clinical Trials Unit, University of Edinburgh, invites participation in the Cavernomas A Randomised Effectiveness (CARE) pilot study.
This prospective randomised controlled trial (RCT) aims to estimate the feasibility of performing a definitive main phase RCT comparing treatment without surgery to treatment including surgery (with neurosurgery or Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery, according to their availability in clinical practice) for improving outcomes for people with symptomatic brain cavernoma.
The CARE study aims to recruit 60 participants from neuroscience centres across the UK and Ireland.
Set up of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast is underway. Recruitment will be led by:
- Principal Investigator (adult team): Mr Ashraf Abouharb, Consultant Neurosurgeon
- Principal Investigator (paediatric team): Mr Mano Shanmuganathan, Consultant Neurosurgeon
It is anticipated that recruitment to the study will begin in Northern Ireland in August 2021. Please contact the relevant Principal Investigator should you have patients suitable for participation in this study.
