MS Ireland 2009 Research

MS Ireland’s 2009 Research Programme is now open and will accept formal applications. The programme awards funding from time to time for specific research projects that will help to better understand MS and/or develop effective treatments and interventions.

MS Ireland will consider any application relevant to MS. However, applications within the following themes are particularly encouraged:

  • Basic and Clinical Science - Mechanisms of nerve damage, repair and protection
  • Quality of Life
  • Service Delivery

Applications may be made using the official Research Fund 2009 Application Form. Applicants are asked to read the ‘MSI Research Programme Application Guidelines’ before completing the application form. Closing date for receipt of all applications is Friday 27th March 2009.

All applications will be reviewed by MS Ireland's Medical Advisory and Research Committee and successful applications will be sent for peer review. It is MS Ireland’s intention to submit suitable applications to the HRB/MRCG Joint Funding Scheme and to work with the UK MS Society of Northern Ireland.

MS Ireland’s 2008 Research Programme awarded funding to two projects lead by Dr Una Fitzgerald of NUI Galway and Dr Mark Pickering of UCD. Dr Fitzgerald’s project will look at the pathology of lesions occurring in the grey matter, while Dr Pickering will look at memory and cognition in MS. These projects are now commencing.
