Develop advanced skills in Cerebrovascular and Stroke Medicine

Stroke is the leading cause of adult physical disability worldwide. Every year there are approximately 7,500 stroke events and 2,500 TIA events in Ireland. Evidence shows that rapid diagnosis and treatment following stroke improves outcomes.

Cerebrovascular and Stroke Medicine is an exciting, rapidly evolving specialty - New models of care, including the development of stroke units, reconfiguration of services and thrombolytic therapy are significantly improving the mortality and morbidity associated with stroke.

This one-year diploma will help you develop advanced knowledge and skills in the diagnosis, treatment and secondary prevention of stroke and rehabilitation of patients with acute stroke. You will build a solid foundation on which to pursue further formal training in stroke medicine.

Our Diploma may be suitable for you if you are

  • a doctor with an MRCPI qualification or equivalent
  • an Advanced Nurse Practitioner
  • a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Stroke Medicine

Diploma Format

There are two week-long classroom-based modules, with supplemental online learning. At the end of the year, you will be required to pass a written examination and an OSCE examination.
