HSE Training Grants

Two funded Scholarship / Fellowship Grant Programmes are offered by the Irish Health Service Executive (HSE), the Dr. Richard Steevens Scholarship and the National SpR / SR Academic Fellowship Programme.

​Dr. Steevens Scholarship

The Dr. Richard Steevens Scholarship is awarded annually for overseas training to Specialist Registrars / Senior Registrars with strong track receords in achievement. The scholarship supports doctors to train in centres of excellence overseas in novel areas of medicine and patient care which are limitied or unavailable in Ireland, and to bring the skills back to the Irish Health Service. National SpR / SR Academic Fellowship Programme

The programme supports Specialist / Senior Registrars to enter an integrated training pathway for clinical training leading to CCST and research leading to PhD. Previously medical trainees had to pause their clinical training in order to undertake research. The aim of the programme is to trainthe academic clinicians and academic scientists of the future. Applicants must be in the early stages of Higher Specialist Training. The programme was jointly established by the HSE and Health Research Board (HRB), in 2009.
